In a lightning‑fast finale at the Nigeria Cricket Federation Oval 2, Robinson Obuya’s blistering 20 off six balls turned a modest target of 28 into a 28‑0 victory for Uganda, leaving Gambia reeling after just 8.2 overs of batting. The match, part of the Men's T20 World Cup Africa Sub Regional Qualifier C 2026, delivered one of the most dramatic finishes in the tournament’s short history.
Match Summary
Gambia won the toss and elected to bat under clear skies with a temperature hovering around 31.9 °C and a humidity of 37 %. Their innings collapsed spectacularly, managing only 27 runs for the loss of 10 wickets in just 8.2 overs. The early wickets fell to a disciplined Gambia bowling unit, highlighted by Riazat Ali Shah’s 3 for 11 in three overs and Enock Kasaija’s 3 for 14 in four overs. Alpesh Ramjani added a crucial two‑wicket burst, conceding just two runs in his single over.
Uganda’s chase was a textbook example of T20 efficiency. Opening the innings, they required a mere 28 runs to win, and Obuya answered the call with a rapid 20‑run onslaught, hitting boundaries at will. Uganda reached the target in just 1.4 overs without losing a wicket, sealing a 28‑0 victory and posting a remarkable Uganda T20I score of 28/0.
Key Performances
Robinson Obuya (Uganda) – 20 runs off 6 balls (4 fours, 1 six). His aggressive stroke‑play set the tone, turning a modest chase into a swift, decisive win.
Riazat Ali Shah (Gambia) – 3 wickets for 11 runs in 3 overs. Shah’s early breakthroughs kept Uganda under pressure and set the stage for the low‑scoring contest.
Enock Kasaija (Gambia) – 3 wickets for 14 runs in 4 overs. Kasaija’s disciplined line and length further dismantled the Ugandan batting lineup.
Alpesh Ramjani (Gambia) – 2 wickets for 2 runs in 1 over. His spell was a crucial cameo that added to the early drama.
Turning Points
The match hinged on two pivotal moments. First, Gambia’s top order faltered under the pressure of Shah and Kasaija’s opening spell, collapsing to 27/10 well before the 20‑over limit. The second turning point arrived instantly when Obuya walked to the crease. His explosive 20 runs in just six deliveries not only erased the required runs but also ensured Uganda never looked back, making the chase a formality.
Weather conditions played a subtle role, with clouds and sun alternating throughout the evening, but the 1 % chance of rain never materialised, allowing uninterrupted play.
Series Implications
This win gives Uganda a crucial edge in the Men's T20 World Cup Africa Sub Regional Qualifier C 2026, boosting their net run rate and positioning them favourably for the next stage of qualification. For Gambia, the loss highlights the need to bolster their batting depth and handle early pressure from quality bowlers.
Looking ahead, Uganda will aim to maintain momentum, while Gambia must regroup quickly to stay alive in the qualifier.
